What does it mean to be a Unicorn?

If you are a Unicorn, you are special.  You are a mother, a wife, an auntie, a sister, a godmother, a career woman, a business owner and more.  Some of us are all of these things at one time. Unicorns are unique, they are unimaginable,  and they are magical.  I wanted to find a way to celebrate the ambition of women like this; women that don't really think twice about the things that they do because they feel so natural and necessary.  I believe that just because an action is necessary that doesn't make it any less incredible.  We don't recognize ourselves and the work that we do enough.  We are often times so busy taking care of everyone else that we don't take care of ourselves.
Why did you do a photoshoot?

This photoshoot was an opportunity to celebrate who we are, together. Two hours of collaborating with each other, laughing with each other, helping each other, and inspiring each other. Many of the ladies featured in this project were not acquainted. However, if you were on the outside looking in, you sure couldn't tell. It was all love.
But did you style/dress anyone personally?

Being a personal stylist is not just about getting dressed.  It encompasses all things beauty.  It is absolutely useless for a person to look their best, but feel their worst. We must love ourselves, believe in ourselves, and take care of ourselves. When we are unable to do these things, we need each other.  We are definitely stronger together. Life isn't always about competitions and comparisons.  It's more about uniting and uplifting.  When you think of Emjay C, I don't want you to think of just someone to dress you or to go shopping for you.  I want you to think of a sister or a friend.  I want you to feel motivated, encouraged and inspired.  I want you to KNOW that if nobody else believes in you, I do!

So when you look in the mirror, before you're off to your next meeting, next day of work, or about to change your baby's next dirty diaper; like who you see looking back at you,  say "Hey beautiful" and know that you are much more than your reflection. You are a Unicorn. You are Magical.

Adoring Emjay C, LLC...One year later

Good Morning Beautiful!!!!!

Emjay C specializes in getting people primped and prepped.  We like to help people find, develop, or enhance their style and show it off to the world.

The blog was launched to give people an idea on how to do that. Shortly after the blog was introduced, I decided to take my excitement and abilities and turn them into a business.

                                                                                                          Emjay, Stylist & Kim, Hairstylist

This would mark the beginning of an absolutely amazing adventure in which partnerships, friendships, and wonderful experiences would be developed.

Never feels like "work" when you're having this much fun

When starting a business, you never know what you are going to encounter, how successful its going to be, or if it will be successful at all remains a mystery.  You come up with an idea, draft a plan, go for it and hope for the best!

One year in business is, in my mind, an incredible accomplishment.  I just want to thank those that have supported it and been there along the way.

I truly appreciate all of the encouragement, complements, likes, time, etc. that you all have offered throughout the year. Emjay C, LLC is just getting started and we have a long way to go! I am looking forward to more and more GREATNESS!
Always something to talk about

Prefer to be Polished

I like polished looks. Those Olivia Pope, First lady Michelle Obama, Angela Bassett perfectly polished kind of looks. They are my thing. It may be hard for some to imagine being polished with rips, tears, and/or cuts in your jeans. Leave it to me to make that happen.  Distressed jeans give a super casual look, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with dressing up your casual.  I really enjoy getting all dolled up but I also like feeling relaxed in my clothes. And let’s face it, sometimes casual dress is more fitting than a Kate Spade party dress and pumps.
Remember my Tracy Nicole coordinate outfit from last week?  Well here’s the crop top from that two piece set right here.  As if I need another reason to love her garments, she gave me one more.  I can use the pieces in different ways to make different looks.
My Jeans alone with a tank or a graphic Tee would create an awesome relaxed look. I like to call that my “run to the grocery store on a Saturday” wear.   I decided, however, to pair my distressed jeans with a sleeveless crop top, wool hat, cross body bag and heels.  WAIT, did she say wool!?  ---YES!  Hat fabrics are crossing seasons these days. Someone once said to me that they could not imagine wearing a wool or felt hat in the warm weather because it would feel like their head was going to catch a blaze at any moment. Well, listen if you can’t stand the heat then I suggest a nice straw one or no hat at all. I like to push the envelope a little so if it looks like I shouldn’t have it on, I might give it try.  Who made up all these little fashion rules anyway!?  Rules are meant to be broken so focus more on style instead of fashion and make your own!

Live in Your Strength

As a fashion blogger, personal shopper, and stylist I meet lots of people in the fashion and beauty industry; fellow stylists, make-up artists, hair stylists, clothing designers, etc.   I travel to different fashion events giving me a chance to network with others, get new ideas and learn a ton!  The last time I was visiting Atlanta, I got the opportunity to meet a clothing designer named Tracy Nicole. I have to tell you, my friends, meeting Tracy is one of my favorite encounters to date.  She’s not just a fashion designer, but Tracy is the mother of two beautiful girls, Kennedy and Kristian, an author, entrepreneur, and breast cancer survivor.

One afternoon I sent Tracy a text, asking if I could come by and meet her. I wanted to talk with her about her clothing line, check out some of her pieces, and ask her a couple of questions.  I had no idea that I was in for such a treat! I asked Tracy how she got started in the fashion business, letting her know that I was interested in hearing her story. She shared with me that she had gone to school for and practiced occupational therapy.   She told me how fashion and style was always in her blood and so she also decided to go to fashion design school at night while still operating in therapy.  Eventually Tracy opened a clothing store in which she carried at least fifty different designers.  She attributed carrying other designers’ pieces at that time to her lack of confidence in her own abilities as a designer.  Tracy operated the store for about five years, and then decided to open up her very own studio with her designs.

Shortly after opening the studio, Tracy received some devastating news. She was diagnosed with breast cancer.  It is at this point while she was telling the story that I was hit with a rush of multiple emotions.  I instantly felt sadness, joy, excitement, and a surprising connection to this incredibly strong woman standing in front of me.  All I could think about was how young she was, her young children, and her growing business.  I mean, here she was.  As she was finally gaining the confidence to take that leap and build her design studio, she gets sick with an illness that could quite possible cut all of that short.

While she was in the hospital, friends and family closed down her new studio and transitioned it into her home so she could continue to work.  Tracy has since recovered and opened another studio outside of her home where she works and holds private shopping sessions.

So there she was standing in her strength, speaking with me about her amazing venture and here I just thought I was coming to learn about garments. Instead, l was reminded that we can do all things. We are stronger than we think we are and it is possible to overcome and live in your strength. What a powerful lesson.
Let me tell you all why I absolutely fell in love with Tracy Nicole clothing at first sight.  The clothes are comfortable AND sexy.  I often hear people say that they need comfort when dressing, to explain why they prefer to wear leggings and sweatpants.  Well, look no further.  Tracy’s pieces are comfort clothes in which you can go just about anywhere. The pencil skirt, crop top coordinate outfit was a must have for me.  When asked what sparks her design ideas, Tracy said timelessness. I definitely saw the timeless elements in each design.  I think that her clothing makes women feel good and look good while remaining stylish; that’s my kind of designer!  I just adore crisp classic looks.  Classic looks survive every trend and when done correctly will stand out in any crowd (positively, of course).

No stranger to great recognition, Tracy has been highlighted in various publications including Essence Lucky Magazine, Paper City, Jezebel, and Atlanta Style.  I am honored that she would take the time to speak with me and be featured on the blog Primped and Prepped by Emjay.  THANKS TRACY!

If you like what you see here, my loves, Tracy Nicole is available by appointment only, where she will give you the luxury of your very own personal shopping experience.  You can also check out her website: and her blog You can follow her on facebook at, on Twitter @tracynicoleatl Instagram @tracynicoleclothing and Pinterest: tracynicoleatl.

Call a Spade a Spade

Guess who’s BACK! It’s been a while my friends.  Between make overs, photo shoots, fashion weeks, and studying, we had to take a little break from blogging.  I thought I’d return with a BANG!!!  Those of you, who have followed me and know me, also know that I absolutely love Kate Spade.  She is one of my favorite designers. Her clothing fits me perfectly.  Her dresses, shoes, hand bags and accessories provide a crisp perfect finish that is sure to turn heads.  In the words of my mother, Patricia, “nothing but pure class!”  Kate is known for beautiful bright colors, perfectly placed polka-dots, and stunning stripes.

For some reason I am head over heels in love with navy blue right now, especially that rich deep navy blue, with a little shine. That’s how I would describe this dress.  It has got to be one of my favorite pieces, so please don’t judge if you catch me in it a few times!!!

This dress is perfect for a formal event such as a wedding, a dance, or a dinner.  But darling! You can also dress this number down a bit, pair it with some basic nude or black pumps and wear it as your Sunday’s best.   I decided to glam it up a little with my sparkling Betsey Johnson Pumps with a, yes, you guessed it, big beautiful bow.

I grabbed my Kate Spade luggage bag, perfect for a woman on the go, and I was off!

Now it’s your turn!  Tell me what you think of this look. Ask me a question. Give me suggestions. Tell me if and how you might have worn this dress. Where would you go?

Thanks for Stopping By!!!

Sexy Sequins-Holiday Attire

Hello Friends!  Its that time of year. Decorations are everywhere, Christmas carols are playing on the radio and the holiday socials are on and poppin'.  One question: Is your outfit poppin'?  If you are wondering what to wear during this time, look no further. Get into sequins!

Sequins were a really big summer fashion trend for 2015, and we are carrying them into the winter months; just in time for Christmas.

A couple of do's and don'ts for sequined pieces.  1. Don't over dress them. Sequins are dressy enough. For example, you don't necessarily need a statement necklace with a sequined item. Even if the garment seems to have a neckline that is perfect for a necklace, be very careful with adding accessories.  Remember less is more, especially when the garment is already making a statement all on its own.

2. Don't wear too many sequins at once. I love sequins, but if you have on a sequined dress you do not need sequined shoes. Contrasting your shoes with the other garment, as seen in these pictures is always a nice idea.

Thanks for Stopping By!

Send me your holiday dress ideas, pictures, and more.  I'd love to hear from you!
